The Skin Cancer Foundation’s Destination Healthy Skin mobile screening and education program will be hitting the road again in July 2021.
Here are some highlights from our 2019 program:
On August 11, 2019 we wrapped up the Destination Healthy Skin program in Greenwich, CT. Here’s a look at all the exciting places we went, the wonderful people we met and the moving stories we heard during summer 2019.
We traveled 10,000 miles around the country, providing more than 1,800 free skin cancer screenings along with educational and sun protection products and information to thousands more people in 18 cities.
Our volunteer dermatologists identified more than 578 potential skin cancers and precancers, including 40 suspected melanomas.
These powerful numbers are only part of the story. Perhaps even more significant, many of the people we’ve met have told us that if it weren’t for Destination Healthy Skin coming to town, they would never have gotten a skin exam. And, we’ve heard from a number of volunteer doctors who suspect that by performing these free screenings, they may have saved a life.
Overview: We kicked off in New York City on May 13, with two full days of skin cancer screenings, education and giveaways before heading to Florida, Louisiana, Texas and Arizona. We finished the month of June traveling along the beautiful California coast and headed east to Salt Lake City, Utah and Denver, Colorado, where we were visited by the USA Boxing High Performance/National Team. On July 15, we passed the halfway point in the journey, with more than 1,100 screenings in the books. From there, we traveled back east, stopping in Chicago, Indianapolis, Louisville and Nashville before heading to our final event.
Highlights: Our Kid’s Corner, with its sun-safety education and fun activities is a big hit everywhere we travel! In Austin, Miss Texas International stopped by to get her skin checked and delivered a very important message about skin cancer early detection. It’s a message that seems to be spreading far and wide! Our event manager Amy has seen a steady stream of people in every city, eager to learn more about sun protection and the early warning signs of skin cancer.
For those of you who have already bought a mile, here’s a BIG “thank you” from all of us:
There’s still time to be part of the journey! Every mile we travel makes a difference in the fight against skin cancer.
