Destination Healthy Skin Begins its Journey to 21 Cities in 2021
Our lifesaving journey has begun! The Destination Healthy Skin RV is on the road, traveling to 21 cities around the country, where local dermatologists are providing free, full body skin cancer screenings.
We expect to screen 1,500 participants from August to November, and thousands more people will benefit from early detection education and sun protection products.
A Great Start in The Big Apple
We kicked off strong on August 1 in New York City with three full days of skin cancer screenings, education and giveaways.
Some NYC highlights: Over three days of events, six dermatologists screened 93 people.
On Sunday, our very first participants were a sixteen-year-old girl, Ava, and her dad, Lawrence. Ava saw an Instagram post about the screenings and asked her dad if he would take her to the RV. Ava made sure her father took one of The Big See window clings to post at home as a reminder to perform self-exams.
On Monday, Ariel Ostad, MD, found suspected melanomas on two people of color. While people with darker skin tones are less likely to get skin cancer, when they do get it, it is often found at later stages, when it is harder to treat.
“Skin cancer can affect people of races and ages,” Dr. Ostad explained. “I cannot stress enough the importance of practicing sun safety. It is imperative to wear your sunscreen and make sure to reapply every 2 hours when in direct sun exposure.”
On Tuesday, Saakshi Khattri, MD was interviewed by a local TV station about the importance of skin exams and sun protection.
Here are some of our favorite moments from the New York City stop.
1 City Down, 20 to Go!
On August 4, the RV headed north to Buffalo, and will continue on to Cincinnati, Detroit, Chicago and Minneapolis, where we will finish out the month of August.
